Freckles that seem so cute and sweet to some are a nightmare for others. Areas of red, yellow, tan, light brown or even black are the result of over exposure to the sun. Freckles come in two forms. Ephelides are simple freckles, often genetic and can begin in early childhood from sun exposure and solar Lentigines result from sun damage to the skin. Ephelides are darker in the summer and lighter in the winter. Solar Lentigines basically remain the same color but may darken during the summer months. These flat discolorations are usually harmless and require no medical treatment. However many still want to get rid of freckles.
To suppress the appearance of freckles sun avoidance and sun protection are key. A sunscreen with a SPF of 30 and preferably one with zinc or titanium oxide can help to shield the skin from the UV rays that initiate the browning. Sun screen should be used at all times while undergoing other treatments as well as used alone.
Topical solutions such as retinoids and bleaching agents are often used to lighten the appearance of the freckles. The directions need to be followed exactly and diligently. Topical solutions often do not begin to produce results for at least three months. Laser treatments are the gold standard for getting rid of freckles. Lasers work by infusing specific light energy to target the pigment. Melanin is then heated and destroyed. Often several treatments may be required to achieve the desired results. |
