Remember the Brady Bunch episode where Jan rubs lemons on her face to remove her freckles? Unfortunately the use of citrus, while a natural alternative for freckle remover, is only marginally effective. Diligent use may lighten an area temporarily but will not remove those small flat brown discolorations that plague so many. Freckles are the result of increased melanin production in concentrated areas as a result of sun exposure. While some freckles are genetic, many will appear as a result of sun damage.
There is no tried and true freckle remover. Since freckles are not cancerous, removing them is not considered medically necessary. Topical retinoids, bleaching creams and chemical peels all have the ability to lighten the color of the freckles. Treatments should be used in conjunction with sunblock to keep the harmful rays deflected from the area. Prescription strength topical solutions work best. A minimum of 3-6 months is needed for observable results.
Laser and IPL therapy have the best track record for consistent positive results. Lasers use light energy which targets the melanin. Laser resurfacing will remove the epidermal layer of skin. Ablating the skin initiates new cell growth and stimulates collagen below the skin surface. As the top layer of skin is burned off, the darker pigment is removed as well. When healing is complete, new smooth, evenly pigmented skin is the result. Sunscreen needs to be worn daily after treatment to keep the skin free of freckles.
IPL treatments do not removal the top layer, but work below the surface to bring the pigmented areas to the surface. Wavelengths of light are selectively absorbed by the melanin to heat and destroy the abnormality. Freckles can become crusty or bruised and then slough off in a week or two. The results are freckle free skin. Several treatments are needed at one month intervals for maximum results. A consultation with a dermatologist will help determine the type of freckles and which removal treatment will benefit you. |
