A chemical peel requires the use of a chemical solution to be applied to the skin to assist with smoothing skin texture, eliminating damaged outer layers of skin and evening out skin tone and color. This process can alleviate mild to moderate acne, hyperpigmentation brought about by hormones, sun damage, freckles and acne, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Chemical peels can also remove pre cancerous cells. Peels are available in strengths ranging from mild to deep.
The lightest or least invasive version of the chemical peel is called the micro peel or the Alpha Hydroxy Acid peels (AHA). These are mild and quick. Often they are referred to as the lunchtime peel and have no associated downtime. A series of six treatments spaced every two weeks apart and are recommended for effective results. The biggest side effect is redness to the treated area. General cost for these peels is $60-100.
A Trichloroacetic Acid peel or TCA is a medium depth peel. These peels will penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin. A TCA peel will improve skin texture tone and color and decrease the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Minimal to moderate time is needed for recovery and two to three peels are needed at 3 week intervals to achieve the desired results. Popular TCA peels include a Jessners peel or the Blue Peel. Costs can range from $500-700 for a Blue Peel and $1500-2500 for a medium peel.
The deepest chemical peel available is the Phenol peel. The Phenol peel will remove coarse wrinkles, pre cancerous cells and sun damaged pigmented skin including brown spots and freckles. Several months may be required for complete healing. Phenol peels impair the skins ability to generate pigment, causing permanent whitening of the skin. This effect is irreversible making a phenol peel an option only for those who are of a fair complexion. One peel can last for more than ten years. The cost for this peel can range from $3500-5000. Consult with your dermatologist to determine if a chemical peel is right to for your freckle removal needs. |
